Samenvatting

Disidentification in Expanding Circles: Thoughts about Rwanda. Identification with and disidentification of foreigners are discussed in a continuation of an earlier essay (1994 [see abstract 9407055]), in which these phenomena were viewed as cognitive and affective processes that form two sides of an emotional triangle with unfamiliarity and indifference as its basis. It is argued that these modern phenomena are the result of global mobility, making contact with formerly unknown population groups more common. Presented as a case in point is the situation in Rwanda, arguing that the genocide that took place in 1994 resulted from hate propaganda emphasizing social exclusion and affective disidentification. Historical and anthropological studies describing possible origins of the present differences between the tribal groups are reviewed, and it is argued that both national and international political and social factors inspired the disidentification campaign that led to genocide. 38 References.
