Samenvatting

The Weekend of Terror. Transgression of Boundaries as Ritual. Once each year since 1984, the Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam, Netherlands, sponsors a horror film festival known as The Weekend of Terror. The ordinary rules of audience behavior are suspended; rolls of toilet paper and beachballs are tossed about, people run through the aisles, and many viewers come costumed as monsters or serial murders. A historical sketch of horror films is presented, dating back to 1896. Discussed in this light is the extension of the notion of transgressive violence in Georges Bataille's Eroticism: Death and Sensuality (1986), in which classical anthropological theories of sacrificial ritual are reexamined within a social science rather than psychoanalytical framework. 21 References.
