Samenvatting

Dostoyevsky and Freud. Autonomous Gambling and Addiction in Gambling. Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Gambler (1866) is often narrowly treated as a portrayal of addiction to gambling. However, the modern notion of gambling not for financial gain, but for enjoyment of the thrill of the game can be seen in Dostoyevsky, as was suggested by Sigmund Freud. The sociological meaning of the novel lies in the links it seeks to illustrate between concepts of gambling and the social conditions of gamblers. Dostoyevsky and Freud were at odds on the nature of gambling addiction. The former saw it as a way to make money, and the latter as a psychological malady. Through his literary treatment of the topic of gambling, Dostoyevsky provided concrete images that the public could use in the discussion of gambling issues. Adapted from the source document.
