Samenvatting

The Knife as an Extension of the Arm: Justification of 'Knifing' among Curacao Youngsters in the Netherlands. An analysis of justifications offered by 60 Curacao immigrant boys in the Netherlands for carrying and using knives; the sample was evenly split between boys with and without police records. Data obtained during interviews with the boys and their families show that most boys took the use of knives for granted. Few differences in attitudes were found between the two groups of boys. A literature review supports an examination of the meaning and origins of carrying knives; special attention is given to neutralization theories and concepts of honor and manhood. 1 Table, 40 References.
