Samenvatting

On the Two Faces of Political Right-Wing Extremism in Flanders and the Netherlands. Confronting the Ideology of Extreme Right-Wing Parties with the Ideology of Their Voters. Analyzes ideological differences between rightist extremist parties and their members in Flanders, Belgium, and in the Netherlands. Such ideology is generally held to contain five essential elements: (biological) racism, extreme ethnic nationalism, the leadership principle, antiparliamentarism, and antileftist attitudes. However, at the basis remains an underlying belief in the inequality of individuals and groups. The Flemish Bloc Party maintains such an ideological platform, but analysis of 1991 interview data from 230 members reveals that not all of them are extremists. The gap between the party and the electorate is due to its cultivation of two faces: (1) a populist, moderate stance to attract voters; and (2) an extreme right-wing face to recruit and motivate militants. Less is known about the ideology of Dutch right-wing parties and their voters. However, a literature review suggests that patterns found in Flanders may well extend to the Netherlands.
