Samenvatting

Shifting Inequality in the Netherlands. A review essay on a book edited by J. Dronkers and W. C. Ultee, Verschuivende ongelijkheid in Nederland. Sociale gelaagdheid en mobiliteit ([Shifting Inequality in the Netherlands. Social Stratification and Mobility] Assen: Van Gorcum, 1995). The studies here were selected to be of interest to journalists, seen as representatives of public interest. Social inequality was measured in terms of economic privileges (income, property, labor market position), status, access to knowledge and information, and political rights and power. Most of the studies focused more on social mobility than social inequality. General conclusions were that: Dutch society has become more open in recent decades, education has increased in importance, and the effect of parents' career on that of their children has decreased.
