Samenvatting

Shifting Inequality: Dutch Sociology of Stratification Puts Itself to the Test. A review essay on a book edited by J. Dronkers and W. C. Ultee, Verschuivende ongelijkheid in Nederland. Sociale gelaagdheid en mobiliteit ([Shifting Inequality in the Netherlands. Social Stratification and Mobility] Assen: Van Gorcum, 1995). The SISWO (acronym not defined) workgroup on social stratification consists of scholars at various Dutch universities with the goal of investigating socioeconomic patterns in the tradition of quantitative empirical sociology. The productivity of this group in terms of journal articles and conference reports has been great. The present collection of studies includes research on: parental background; education; professional status; lifestyle; marriage; voting behavior; and unemployment. The work illustrates some of the strengths of the institutional position of Dutch sociology as a practical social science; some shortcomings are also addressed. 1 Table, 3 References. M. Meeks
