Samenvatting

Rational and Other Choices: Marginal Notes on the Rational Choice Model. It is argued that process sociology should be constructed on the basis of more coherently developed theories. Those adhering to formal models, eg, rational choice theoreticians, should devote more attention to long-term processes. Abram de Swaan stressed that in historical sociological research, a high level of systematic and theoretical sophistication can be attained, facilitating the validity of conclusions. However, this approach skirts the issue of how people develop strategies to cope with social change. Historical sociology can illuminate the reasons for changes, eg, the contemporary formation of the international community. It is suggested that de Swaan allows too much accommodation to rational choice models. 3 Figures, 18 References. M. Meeks
