Samenvatting

New Age: Counterculture, Paraculture or Core Culture? Analyzes the recent upsurge of New Age as a Dutch cultural phenomenon. The term New Age may be loosely applied to a varied network of beliefs and practices with an esoteric worldview. New Age has undergone a shift in sociocultural position from the 1960s to the 1990s. It started as a counterculture movement, entered a paracultural phase on the margins of society in the 1970s, and in the 1980s moved steadily toward the cultural center as evidenced by the growth in the number and size of New Age organizations. Important processes have included psychologization and commercialization mirroring developments in the society at large. In light of the pluralistic and fragmented nature of contemporary culture, it is not likely that New Age will vanish anytime soon. 68 References. Adapted from the source document.
