Samenvatting

Civilization: The Question of Scope and Interdependence. An Attempt at Conceptual Clarification. The civilizing process has a much broader scope than does state formation, so that the links between them become rather fluid. In this light, Norbert Elias's theory would require revised conclusions, eg, adding the concept of the cultivation of the civilizing processes, while the state formation calls for the general concept of collectivization. Specialization and professionalization need to be considered as economic aspects of social processes, since both are tied to the general social relations concept of interdependence. A key historical change occurred during a late stage in the development of agricultural society, when advances in state formation and professionalization happened within the context of general cultural, political, and economic processes. 76 References.
