Samenvatting

Internationalization and Socioeconomic Inequality within States. The impact of economic internationalization or globalization on growing socioeconomic inequality in Western societies was examined through analysis of statistical data on disposable household income and foreign direct investment (FDI). Analysis yielded partial confirmation of a positive correlation between increase of income inequality in a given country during the 1970s and 1980s and rate of growth of FDI inflows and outflows. Income inequality was not positively related to the inward and outward FDI stock relative to gross domestic product. Globalization is discussed as only part of the explanation of the recent increase in socioeconomic inequality in Western societies; the role of politico-institutional factors is also considered. 5 Tables, 35 References.
