Financial Internationalization and Economic Regulation. The process of financial internationalization and its relationship to economic regulation is examined. Both external factors (eg, deregulation) and internal factors (eg, the potential for scale economies) drive financial institutions to cross borders. Internationalization interacts with economic regulation in a dialectic fashion at both macro- and microlevels, weakening the grip of domestic fiscal and monetary policymakers and individual financial firms on the economy. Governments react by coordinating policies at a regional level, but these efforts generally fail to neutralize the effects of the financial internationalization process. 5 Tables, 18 References.
