Samenvatting

In Search of the Epicenter of the 1960s. During the 1960s, a number of rapid changes occurred in Dutch politics, culture, and social economy, all of which were interrelated. By the late 1950s, the equilibrium between tradition and modernity was already very precarious. Behind the ostensibly pillarized and conservative society lay another country, where education and industry were expanding and where patterns of sexual behavior were changing almost unnoticed. During the 1960s, the clash between moral regulations and real behavior worsened because of polarization between the prewar generation and the postwar babyboomers, both of whom underwent an identity crisis as the result of intense social change. Thus, the epicenter of the shock waves of the 1960s can be localized in the context of generational polarization. Adapted from the source document.
