Samenvatting

Myth History and Wish History. Reality and Imagination about the Incas as an Example of a General Theme in Human History. Proceeding from the concepts of myth history and wish history developed in William H. McNeill's Mythistory and Other Essays (1986), attention is focused on the historical scholarship on the Inca empire, which has developed over the last 500 years in Peru, Western Europe, and the US. Analysis shows that the officially accepted versions of Inca history have to a large degree reflected the ideological framework of the rulers. Many historiographical schools developed their own wish variants, understandable in view of the social background of the authors and their readership. 90 References.
