Samenvatting

A Change in Course. The Rise and Fall of the Prostitute Liberation Movement. In the Netherlands, the prostitute rights movement began as a coalition of feminist and others who felt that the legalized brothel regulations impeded consolidation of the legal status and social position of prostitutes. In the 1980s, this movement exerted strong pressure to lift the regulations. Prostitute rights became part of a more general government liberation policy to eliminate sexual violence. Analysis shows that this policy did not strengthen the position of prostitutes because their profession was viewed more in terms of a welfare issue than a labor issue. Thus, all agencies charged with their interest as well as most social scientists have usually focused their attention on the problematic categories of prostitutes while ignoring their professional status. Currently, professional prostitutes are seeking to rid their ranks of amateurs obstructing their liberation movement. 72 References. Adapted from the source document.
