Samenvatting

How Norbert Elias Became a Classical Sociologist. A literature review traces how Norbert Elias's Uber den Prozess der Zivilisation ([The Process of Civilization] 1939) became a classic within the social sciences. Three interconnected dimensions can be seen in the processes of reception and legitimation: (1) an epistemic level, involving the intrinsic qualities of new insights vis-a-vis established knowledge; (2) an institutional level, involving Elias's position within his academic field; and (3) the transacademic field, including the publishers and journalistic establishment. In the case of Elias, whose academic position was not strong, the broader scientific community strongly buttressed the establishment of his theory. The polemics involving Hans Peter Duerr's Nacktheit und Scham: Der Mythos vom Zivilisationsprozess ([Nudity and Shame: The Myth of the Civilization Process] 1988) illustrate the profound influence of the transacademic field. 1 Figure, 35 References.
