Samenvatting

Identification in Expanding Circles. The social aspects of identification are characterized by dialectics of inclusion and exclusion and by the dynamics of intergroup competition. The psychoanalytic concepts of identification and projection illustrate the parallels between these processes on the personal and group levels, showing their fundamental ambivalence. Social identification was limited to kinship units until the development of agricultural society, in which identification based on proximity emerged. Social identification was not extended to larger groups, eg, class, race, and ethnicity, until the development of urban-industrial society. An identification with the whole of humanity is becoming evident, which may be intensified by a sense of global menace and common human destiny. 27 References. Adapted from the source document.
