Samenvatting

Economic Restructuring and Local Consequences. The Case of Drents Dorp, Eindhoven: Industrialization and Deindustrialization at the Neighborhood Level. In the Netherlands deindustrialization led to the loss of 175,000 jobs 1979-1990. Here, the local consequences, and particularly the effects on working class culture, are examined in a case study of the Drents Dorp section of Eindhoven, the home town of the Phillips Co. Interview data from 100 long-term residents show that the debate over the local ramifications of economic restructuring requires specific information on the sociohistorical background of the community, the type of activities affected, and the welfare arrangements mediating between economic development and everyday urban life. 26 References.
