Samenvatting

This article has been retracted by the editors. Medjugorje's Little War. Barbarization in a Bosnian Pilgrimage Center. Analyzes the barbarization process in Medjugorje, Bosnia. The town's privileged position as a pilgrimage center was abruptly ended by the outbreak of civil war between Croatians, Serbs, and Muslims. Barbarization is described as a relatively autonomous process with its own dynamics and developmental structure. It is argued that Norbert Elias's civilizing theory suffers from conceptual ambiguity and does not adequately explain the intertwining of the processes of civilization and barbarization. 62 References.
