Samenvatting

Intoxicants and the Dynamics of Repression and Illegal Supply. An investigation of the effects on production and consumption of the prohibition of intoxicants, with focus on two cases: (1) US prohibition of alcohol (1920-1933); and (2) the international ban on opiates, starting in 1912. Analysis shows how illegal supplies develop and explores the consequences for both consumers and controlling state organs. Very often, unforeseen, undesirable, and counterproductive results have arisen. In both the US and global examples, the forbidden substance tended to be produced in a more concentrated form following prohibition. Further, illegality is found to function as a multiplier both with respect to production and the role of the government agency charged with control. 50 References. Adapted from the source document
