Samenvatting

The Social Dynamics of Autonomous Art. On Pierre Bourdieu's Sociology of Culture. Pierre Bourdieu's cultural sociology focuses on two areas of research and theory: (1) an inquiry into questions of the social conditions of cultural consumption leading to the multidimensional model of class, lifestyle, and taste, presented in La Distinction ([Distinction] 1979); and (2) a preoccupation with the dynamics of cultural production and artistic innovation, culminating in Les Regles de l'art ([The Rules of Art] 1992), offering a systematic rendering of the origin and dynamics of literature. Proceeding from an analysis of literature in the time of Gustave Flaubert and Baudelaire, he advances to a theory of cultural production fields, viewed as a suitable foundation for a science of cultural works. Observations on developments within Bourdieu's own works are included. Adapted from the source document.
