Samenvatting

Education and Religion. Catechism and Sunday Schools in Holland. Since the sixteenth century, Dutch Protestant churches have made use of a variety of strategies to socialize children and youngsters. The British Sunday School Movement, founded by Robert Raikes in the eighteenth century, provided an example for the Dutch, who started their Sunday schools in the nineteenth century. At these schools, youths were taught to read the basic tenets of the church. In the twentieth century, mass schooling and the general decline in church membership, along with other factors, account for the decreasing number of Sunday schools.
