Samenvatting

Jencks in Twente: On the Key Importance of Education and the Labor Market for Women. Longitudinal data on the educational and professional careers of 2,904 students entering primary school in Enschede (Netherlands) in 1964 support the hypothesis that education is a key value in the life course. The statistical analysis was conducted using C. Jencks's model (1979) of the relationships among family background, cognitive skills, educational attainment, occupational status, and income. In a comparison between Dutch and US data, relationships among these variables found to be stronger in the Netherlands. Results show that men and women differ significantly in the effect that cognitive skills (but not educational level) have on their professional careers. 4 Tables, 2 Figures, 2 Appendixes, 27 References.
