Samenvatting

Image of an Island. Travellers' Reports on the Mentality of the Inhabitants of the Isle of Texel, 1750-1875. Travel journals were often used by early anthropologists to assist them in reconstructing certain facets of the society and culture under study. However, this method dwindled with the repatriation of anthropology and the concomitant rise of endogenous ethnography. To illustrate the usefulness and limitations of travel literature in endoethnography, various pieces of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century travelers' observations on the society and culture of the Dutch island of Texel are discussed. 66 References.
