Samenvatting

Dockworkers in Action: The Mobilization Process in Wildcat Strikes in the Port of Rotterdam. The 1970 and 1979 wildcat strikes in the port of Rotterdam, Netherlands, provide a test of M. Olson's rational choice model (1965), which posits that it is highly unlikely that workers would strike without any certainty about outcomes or income compensation. Per interviews with the Rotterdam strike leaders, it appears that such certainty was not crucial to the striking process. Strike leaders, with informal organization, were able to exploit the conflictual working conditions in the docks and build on a widespread mentality of solidarity and an undisciplined casual frame of mind. Theories of dockworkers' subculture, although underestimating the conflict-ridden nature of the labor process at the docks, are more explanatory than the rational choice model in the wildcat strike case. 37 References.
