Samenvatting

The Ways and Weighting of Reciprocity: Gift Relationships between Parents and Children. Drawing from the anthropological theories of B. Malinowski, Marcel Mauss, and M. Sahlins and the sociological theories of Alvin Gouldner and A. P. Fiske, the theoretical basis for empirical research on gift-giving patterns in the Netherlands is articulated. Analysis of 1992 data on gift-giving between parents and children reveals that the new forms of social solidarity associated with the welfare state have not radically altered the tradition of direct reciprocity between family members. On the other hand, results indicate that ways in which patterns of reciprocity manifest themselves have shifted from a pure relationship to a more calculated or affectively weighted one. 3 Tables, 13 References.
