Samenvatting

From Mother to Daughter. Academic Mothers and Their Daughters on the Combination of Work and Family. Assesses whether contemporary working mothers whose mothers also worked while they were growing up are any better prepared for the dual role combining work and families than their counterparts whose mothers did not work. Interviews with 10 university-educated mothers and their daughters in the Netherlands indicate that the daughters did indeed learn that they should go to college and prepare for future jobs, whether or not they expected to have children. The mothers also suggested that, since childrearing was not always as "psychological" as it has become, it may have been easier for them to work and have a family than it will be for their daughters -- despite the advances of women's liberation. 18 References.
