From Their Own Good to Their Own Free Will: On Child-Centered Education. Early in this century, teachers, female professionals, and members of the ascendent cultural bourgeoisie attempted to revitalize the nineteenth-century ideal of love-oriented discipline and to incorporate it in kindergarten classrooms throughout the Netherlands. The practice of child-centered education eventually spread throughout the educational system, although it remains incompatible with the selective function of secondary and university education. It is ironic, then, that macrosociological developments can better explain the independence of contemporary Dutch children than can the widespread institution of love-oriented discipline. 38 References.
