Samenvatting

Football Hooliganism in the Netherlands. The origins of football (soccer) hooliganism in the Netherlands are traced to lower-class boys engaged in street fighting, including fights among young supporters of amateur teams from neighboring locales. Based on the English example, this behavior spread to national and international levels in the 1970s. Hooliganism in the Netherlands has been institutionalized primarily by the efforts to prevent it, bringing hooligans together to fight the police; media attention has also stimulated this behavior. This form of male culture is reviewed in the context of growing violence among youth in the Netherlands. 1 Table, 50 References. Adapted from the source document.
