Samenvatting

Domestic violence. Domestic violence has surfaced as a public issue twice within the last century. At the turn of the century, philanthropists gave vent to their feelings of indignation about the violent family life of the working class and the poor. After WWII, a sequence of disclosures raised public awareness: the battered child syndrome was discovered by doctors, and subsequently, wife battering was raised as an issue by radical women, often victims themselves. During the 1960s, radical psychologists pointed to the existence of psychical violence as characteristic of modern family relations. Netherlands statistics on child abuse, wife abuse, and incest are reported here. More recently, sexual violence against girls and women has been politicized. The association of domestic violence and poverty is also discussed. 66 References. Adapted from the source document.
