Samenvatting

Violence and First Aid. A Pilot Study in European Cities. Statistics from various sources are compared to assess the rates of violent crime in different West European countries. According to hospital records, Paris, France, has the highest proportion of victims of violence, followed by Amsterdam (Netherlands), Copenhagen (Denmark), and London (England), respectively. These findings correspond to national crime rates and Interpol data. A 1989 Dutch study yielded similar findings, taking into consideration that the level of violence for Amsterdam is higher than the national level, and that ethnic differences in the neighborhoods of the hospitals may affect the crime rate; eg, immigrants from the Mediterranean and Caribbean are overrepresented among the perpetrators. London data, however, show that where immigrants from Bangladesh predominate in the hospital area, the rate of violence is relatively low. These results indicate positive correlations between a stable state organization and relatively moderate social inequality, and between a low level of violent crime and a high level of property crime. 8 Tables.
