Samenvatting

Criminal Violence in the Netherlands. A Historical-Sociological Analysis. Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics data on crime rates, medical statistics, and surveys of crime victims, 1855-1990, are used to assess long-term trends in criminal violence. From the mid-nineteenth century until 1970, the level of violent crime remained stable, but the 1970s saw a steep rise, especially in murder. This rise is interpreted by distinguishing between instrumental and impulsive violence: it appears the former has been on the rise, while the latter has not. 7 Tables, 2 Figures, 41 References.
