Samenvatting

Reproduction of Social Distinction Forms by People Suffering from Social Phobia Some sociologists hold the view that individuals with social phobias often have anxiety and avoidance tendencies reactualizing forms of social distinction that were once taken for granted, but are no longer acceptable (eg, Gomperts, W. J., "De opkomst van de sociale fobie" [The Rise of Social Phobia], Amsterdams Sociologisch Tijdschrift, 1987, 13, 4, 669-725). To investigate further, the social mobility of social phobic (SP) patients (N = 30) at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) was contrasted with that of agoraphobics and nonphobic people. The findings show that SPs frequently move across country, change their religion, and do not attain professional prestige, despite higher educational achievement. SPs are caught between the traditional elitest and the new egalitarian forms of etiquette. Many have inherited the social consciousness of their parents, leading to loyalty conflicts hindering upward mobility. In many cases the mothers of SPs married men of a lower social class. 9 Tables, 1 Appendix, 96 References. Adapted from the source document.
