Samenvatting

After exploring how basic emotional norms change, and subsequently bring about changes in emotional experience and social reactions, the problem of causation is considered via analysis of three cases: the seventeenth-/eighteenth-century civilizing process; the Victorian emotional style; and the mid-twentieth century. No single factor seems adequate to explain either the range of emotional standards or the underlying style. Multifactorial causation and a mixture of both structural and cultural ingredients do not result in any tidy model of explaining emotional change, but in a set of guidelines or leading questions by which to approach the analytic task. 28 References.
