Samenvatting

Pluralization and the Culture of Negotiation in the Family. Since the 1970s, a pluralization of family lifestyles has occurred in the Netherlands. The increasing participation of women in the paid labor force has led to shifts in the division of labor by gender, smaller family size, and individualization of lifestyles. Interview data are presented from 120 parents ages 40-45 and 120 children ages 10-14 concerning issues of authority within families. Shifts away from the traditional model of authority and obedience toward a style of upbringing involving considerable negotiation of duties and roles can be seen. The problems of the "negotiation household" are explored on a theoretical and practical level. 1 Table, 76 References. Adapted from the source document.
