Samenvatting

..And the Sea Takes: Texelian Fishermen in Adversity and Misfortune. Records indicate that, since the 1830s, scores of fishermen from the Netherlands island of Texel have perished at sea, lost to shipwrecks or other calamities, leaving their families dependent on public charities. An analysis is presented of the coping mechanisms the fishing communities developed during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Mutual insurance and special funds for family survivors were established to provide support in instances of death, disability, or disaster. Although it was not difficult to achieve informal collective action, institutionalized solidarity was hard to maintain. 32 References. Adapted from the source document.
