Little attention has been paid to the prevailing mentalities in pillarized Dutch subcultures, ie, separate Protestant and Catholic communities. By working together, psychologists, historians, and sociologists can formulate new questions along with new insights into old problems. A historical sketch of the formation of the Dutch Reformed Church mental health care pillar shows how emancipation and protection were key concerns among the elites; however, preservation of historical identity was the concern of most church members. 39 References.
