Samenvatting

Carol Gilligan's In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women's Development (Cambridge: Harvard U Press, 1982) described differences in moral orientations between males (Ms) and females (Fs). To investigate this claim, interview data were obtained from Dutch adults (N = 75 Ms and 75 Fs). Analysis shows that Fs have more responsible attitudes toward work. A M's concept of justice is oriented toward individual merit, while a F's is focused on equality of rights and opportunities. These differences are often ascribed to gender-related psychological dispositions, but an alternative interpretation is presented here, stressing a sociological perspective of power in gender relationships. Such power differences may also arise from M and F social position differences. 13 References. Adapted from the source document.
