Together and Alone. Advice on Sex Roles in Wij Willen Weten 1938-1985. Since 1938 the Dutch League for Sexual Reform has published the periodical Wij willen weten, which offers advice on sexual matters. Until the 1960s, the discussion of sex roles emphasized the monogamous relationship as the basis of satisfaction: eg, men were encouraged to show restraint, while women were encouraged to be more active. In the 1970s the emphasis changed to exploration of sexual pleasure for the individual without regard for partners; also genital contact is now considered less important than formerly.
