Samenvatting

Sex Consumers. During the 1950s and 1960s sexual reformers and people working to fight venereal disease predicted that prostitution would disappear after sexuality became liberated. To examine why prostitution still exists in the Netherlands, interview data were obtained from male clients (N = 130, ages 21-65, 55 of whom were single). For a majority of Rs, visiting a prostitute was a strategy to remain independent, not to substitute for a steady partner. Prostitution is not marginalized by sexual freedom; rather liberal attitudes offer entrepreneurs the chance to differentiate their supply and advertise overtly. Adapted from the source document.
