Samenvatting

The Rise of the Sexual Moratorium. During the twentieth century the age of first menstruation has decreased from 15 to 13, and there has been a rapid decline in the age of first intercourse, reducing the time gap between sexual maturity and the onset of sexual activity. Surprisingly, this change began not with the sexual revolution generation but with the prewar generations. Together with a definite trend toward later marriage these changes have defined a new phase in life -- a sexual "moratorium" -- occurring before marriage and parenthood, and during which sexuality is explored and strong commitments are avoided. In spite of the freedom this phase offers, most youth are not promiscuous, but make choices regarding intimate relations, leaving their options open. 7 Graphs, 22 References.
