Notes on Child Abuse and Incest. The Medical Definition, the Feminist Definition, and Their Relation to One Another. The recent focus of interest on children as victims of incest followed, by about a decade, the flurry of interest in child abuse. Although both phenomena occur within a family context, they were exposed differently. Child abuse was studied by professional medical practitioners, developing a restricted medical definition in which child abuse was viewed as a disease. Incest was brought to light by feminists, as an example of the suppression of women by men.
