Samenvatting

Dutch Passports. A Study of Personal Identification and the Politics of Travel. Changes in the mandatory character of passports in the Netherlands are traced from the sixteenth century until today. Passports were used as a means of control during turbulent periods. Over time, their use of a means of recommendation, individualization, nationalization, and democratization declined. These trends were related to the formation of the Dutch nation. Also explored are the effects of increasing internationalization and the emergence of the welfare state after WWII. 57 References.
