Samenvatting

Meanings of Modernity? On the Origins of the Terms "Modern," "Modernity," and "Modernization," and the Use of These Terms in Sociology. "Modern" is one of the most often utilized sociological terms, generally defined as either a historical period or a moment in time. In sociology the usage of modern implies objections against its associate term modernization. Modern designates special contemporary societies, more developed than nonmodern societies. Modern means new and Western and thus presupposes an evolutionary transition from premodern to modern. Adapted from the source document.
