Samenvatting

The Struggle for Symmetrical Parenting. Women and Their Efforts to Promote Shared Parenting in the 1970s and 1980s. Biographic interview data collected from Dutch women on their experience of combining professional employment and motherhood in the 1970s and 1980s (N = 20) are analyzed with regard to the respondents' (Rs) negotiation of shared parenting with their husbands. The example of a female municipal official is presented to illustrate ways of dealing with parental obligation and family financial provision that are equal and fair to both the mother/wife and father/husband. Social stereotypes of the mother and father role models, the relationship between parental responsibility and tasks, and the effect of socialization in early childhood are discussed as relevant to the problem of shared parenting. Analysis reveals that although Rs were able to renegotiate some duties and tasks involved in parenting they were only partially successful due to their ambivalence about motherhood and strong resistance from their husbands. 17 References.
