Samenvatting

This article argues that reflection on new media and visual culture can be connected
with structural elements in Reformed theology, because theology as such can be understood as a form of media theory. For example, God employs the means of revelation to
enter into a relationship with human beings, which he does by the means of grace or
‘media salutis’. Retrieval of this classic theological terminology fits a broadened pneumatology: New media and visual culture can become a vehicle for the work of the Holy
Spirit, but only in the context of the critical principle of biblical revelation. And, as in
the case of the older media that have shaped the worship service and the sermon, so
reflection on a particular medium must demonstrate that it serves a proper theological
goal. This essay will show how the new media can function theologically in three ways.
First, they can inform people of the gospel; second, they can relate to Christ and the
salvation he brings; and, third, they can be the means by which human beings are
drawn into a process of transformation or sanctification.
