Identifying find spots: Tracing the origin of the orphaned wood in the Groningen Institute of Archaeology basement wet lab.
The wood stored in the GIA wet lab for decades may have more contextual information than initially assumed. Several inspections suggest that the material originates from excavations in Ezinge and Leens (Groningen), among other locations. Further detailed research will undoubtedly identify additional objects. We therefore recommend not writing off this material, but storing it — preferably in the Noordelijk Archeologisch Depot in Nuis — in a way that keeps it accessible to researchers. Furthermore, it would be advisable to check whether the most important items require treatment (cleaning, disinfecting and impregnation with polyvinyl alcohol). Dendrochronological dating may still be possible for some objects, such as the alleged side rudder or spade from Ezinge, which has been relocated after 90 years. After further study, the object could potentially be included in a museum display.
