Carissa Aurelia (Spain) and its territory: First results of a new survey project.
While incidental investigations have been conducted at the site of Carissa Aurelia (Cadíz, Andalusia, Spain), our understanding of its development and relationship to the surrounding landscape is limited. The project Carissa Aurelia and the Guadalete valley seeks to fill this gap in knowledge through an integrated programme of fieldwork targeting both the city and the countryside. This contribution discusses the questions, approaches and methods of the intensive field surveys conducted in the territory. The first season of fieldwork, in October 2024, covered an area of c. 4 km2 in the immediate surroundings of the city and revealed ample traces of human use, from prehistory to the medieval period. Of particular interest are the traces of possible clusters of hitherto unknown burials and a series of rural establishments from the Roman period.
