From hunebed to peat bog: A tureen-amphora from the Funnel Beaker culture from Steenwijk (Overijssel, the Netherlands).
In 1905, G.J. ter Kuile (1871-1954), a lawyer from Twente and one of the ‘forefathers’ of Twente historiography, purchased a beautiful Middle Neolithic tureen-amphora in Steenwijk. The pot dates from Horizon 5 of the Funnel Beaker Culture (2975-2850 BCE). The (anonymous) seller had indicated that the pot came from the destroyed hunebed of Rijs (Friesland). As he was a peat worker, it is more likely that it was found in peatland, and the dark appearance of the pot also points in that direction. The pot was probably found in the peat area north of the town of Steenwijk, where peat was still being actively extracted in 1905. It fits the pattern of ritual depositions in wet contexts that we know from the other side of the Drents Plateau.
