DE BURCHT VAN GRAAF EDZARD IN DE STAD GRONINGEN, 1506-1514
Samenvatting
The 16th century brought revolutionary changes in the way of waging war in Europe. Research into the building of fortifications in the days of Count Edzard I of Oostfriesland may contribute to a better insight in the way in which innovations were introduced in the areas of Friesland and Groningen. By means of a combined historical-archaeological investigation many data on the stronghold of Count Edzard in the city of Groningen (1506-1514) could be recovered. Especiaily noteworthy is the way in which the expense was limited by using the pre-existing city defenses. The latemedieval stronghold seems to typify the transition to the Modern Age. For defense the emphasis now clearly was on the earthen walls, which were provided with a good flanking. Certain innovations may possibly have been adopted from Duke Albrecht of Saxony.
